TheLiveBigWay* Digest – October 19th Edition

In this edition of the Digest, we discuss the “why” behind what we do, we mark the silver anniversary of a black day, report on the 2012 Great ShakeOutTM, and announce some exciting company news and events.

Where The “Why” Matters More Than The “What”

“Very few people know why they do what they do. Why does your organization exist? Why do you get up in the morning? And why should anyone care?”

“As it turns out, all the great and inspiring leaders and organizations in the world whether it’s Apple, or Martin Luther King Jr., or the Wright brothers, they all think, act, and communicate the exact same way, and it is the complete opposite to everyone else. All I did was codify it. It is probably the world’s simplest idea. I call it the Golden Circle.”

“It doesn’t matter what you do, it matters WHY you do it.” – Simon Sinek

For Yeske Buie, WHAT we are is a financial planning firm, but WHY we do what we do is for our clients. We are here to help our clients Live Big®. This requires thinking far beyond risk analysis, model portfolios and financial planning strategies. It requires personal, innovative relationships centered on a singular priority: helping clients live their biggest, best life.

Live Big® It’s about the size of your life, not the size of your wallet®

In honor of the WHY behind what we do, we would love for you to join us at our Open House event at the San Francisco office this Thursday, Oct. 25th from 4pm-6:30pm PT.  The staff from both offices will be in attendance, and we will have food, drinks, and a special appearance by the Bayshore Lyric Opera Company.  Let us know you will be coming by sending your RSVP here. We look forward to seeing you!

Please enjoy Simon Sinek’s inspiring TED video here.  And please note that this should not be considered an endorsement of Apple stock!

The Silver Anniversary of a Black Day
Today is October 19, the 25th anniversary of Black Monday, the day in 1987 when the Dow fell by more than 22%.  We’ve created a few charts to commemorate this event which you can see here.

The 2012 Great ShakeOutTM
Yesterday, millions of people across the country participated in the Great ShakeOutTM.  It is a national event to practice what to do and how to stay safe in the event of an earthquake.  The Virginia and California offices joined the cause by observing the drop, cover, and hold technique (visit our Facebook page for photos of the event).

Here is a brief summary of the DOs and DON’Ts:

DO
• DROP to the ground
• Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and
• HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops

DON’T
• Do NOT get in a doorway!
• Do NOT run outside!

In many ways, this is also good advice when the economy or the markets get scary: DO NOT run outside but instead HOLD ON until the shaking stops!

Cristin is now a Registered ParaplannerSM
We are proud to announce that Cristin Etheredge recently received her Registered Paraplanner (RP®) certification.  In order to become a RP®, Cristin had to:

  • Complete a year-long educational program in theory and practical application developed by the College of Financial Planning
  • Pass the proctored and timed end-of-course exam with a 70% score or higher
  • Complete a three-month long internship to verify mastery of a set of basic financial planning-related skills

Cristin will continue to serve as our Operations Administrator but her RP® certification has given her insights that will help her better support Yeske Buie’s aim to be the leading financial planning firm in the country.
