TheLiveBigWay* Digest – The Wisdom of Crowds

In this edition of the Digest, we conduct a Wisdom of Crowds experiment, celebrate Elissa and Dave’s contribution to the Financial Planning Competency Handbook, share photos from our Virginia Retreat and Open House, highlight Elissa’s contribution to The Wall Street Journal, and get ready for Tax Day and Financial Literacy Month.

Wisdom of Crowds – YeBu Style
In his 2004 book, The Wisdom of Crowds, James Surowiecki explored the many situations in which the collective wisdom of a group will surpass that of its smartest individual members. At our recent client event in Virginia, we conducted an experiment testing this proposition with surprising results.

Financial Planning Competency Handbook
Elissa and Dave collectively contributed 30 chapters to the Financial Planning Competency Handbook, the first comprehensive guide to financial planning sponsored by the CFP® Board, which will be published on Monday, April 1st, by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Read more about this first-of-its-kind competency handbook.

Yeske Buie Virginia Retreat and Open House
A little over two weeks ago, the Yeske Buie staff met for our latest semi-annual retreat, after which we hosted an open house in our Virginia office. Below is a panoramic picture Dave took of the YeBu team hard at work. View more pictures from both events and get a glimpse of  the team at work and play over the course of our time together.

Training the Next Generation of Advisors
The Wall Street Journal’s Caitlin Nish quotes Elissa on the topic of career path and developing young advisors.

Tax Deadlines

  • Deadlines – Tax day is a few weeks away (Monday, April 15th), which marks the deadline for making a contribution to a Traditional/Rollover IRA, Roth IRA, Health Savings Account (HSA), SEP-IRA or Solo 401(k). If you file for an extension then the latter two can receive contributions until October 15th.
  • Change to Tax Reporting on Client Private Page®We will no longer be posting a year-end realized gain/loss report to your Client Private Page® as we have done previously (all other reports will still be available). We’ve made this change because your cost basis is now reported on your Schwab 1099. If you have any trouble locating your 1099, please let us know and we’ll get you a copy.

Financial Literacy Month
April is Financial Literacy Month and the 23rd is National Teach Children to Save Day, which is a great time to review the Money Savvy Pig and/or the Cash Cache with your child or grandchild! Let us know if you don’t already have a Pig or Cache and we can send them to you (let us know the recipient’s name, date of birth, and relationship to you).  Watch the following video on the “Five Tips to Teach Your Kids About Money”.
