You’re a Financial Planner… Now What?
“You’re a Financial Planner… Now What?” is the title of a podcast series presented by the Financial Planning Association that features interviews with experts and young advisors alike who share their experiences, knowledge, and practical advice.
One of Yeske Buie’s newest partners, Yusuf Abugideiri, was invited to share his insights on an episode of the podcast that focused on managing others.
In the 45-minute podcast, Yusuf shared his thoughts on the role of a leader and how your care for your team is not unlike your care for your Clients. We’ve pulled together some highlights from the podcast in the space below, and we invite you to explore the podcast in its entirety on FPA’s website.
To Best Serve Others, You Must Feel the World Through Their Heart
“When you come from a place of empathy, humility, and understanding, you’re able to get the most out of your team” – Yusuf Abugideiri
I came on as a partner at Yeske Buie about six weeks ago. And in that role, the importance of dedicating time to the growth and development of your team has become even more obvious. I’ve gained a better appreciation for just how vulnerable you are as an owner, how much you rely on your team, and how important it is to approach your team from a place of empathy and humility, and understanding.
The Role of a Leader
“It’s all about walking the walk and being integrous” – Yusuf Abugideiri
Those who are being led by others need to feel like they have access to leadership. If your team can’t tap into your institutional knowledge and experience, what’s the point?
As a leader, you have the responsibility of delegating work to others and checking-in with your team regularly. Not just to make sure that work is being done, but more important to me is checking-in to build relationships with your team and strengthen them over time. I think that’s where a lot of the value that leadership can provide is in building a strong relationship that ultimately feeds into the culture of your firm and enables everyone and empowers everyone to do their best work.
A Different Kind of Investment Management
“If your team can see how they fit in the overall vision or the overall strategic plan, their output is going to be that much better.” – Yusuf Abugideiri
We work in the financial arena; we’re constantly looking at returns on investment and returns within a Client’s account. Returns within a Client’s account are finite. When it comes to your team, returns on investment are truly infinite. And just like returns in a client’s account, it takes time and commitment to see the return. Treating your team in the same way we treat our Clients – for example, having an objective to maximize someone’s output and help them self-actualize – is, in my mind, the best way to approach management.
