Steve Carell on Humor, Heart, and Kindness

Cropped Hands Of People Throwing Mortarboards Against Clear Sky

Every so often, something comes along that just feels worth passing on. Steve Carell’s 2025 Commencement Speech at Northwestern University was one of those somethings for us. We at YeskeBuie believe that kindness, listening, and generosity can offer a sense of groundedness in uncertain times. (We also love The Office and Steve Carell.) With his signature mix of humor and heart, he reflects on the everyday practice of kindness — how we show up for others and how we care for ourselves. It’s a reminder that small, intentional choices can create connection, perspective, and steadiness, even when the path forward feels unclear. We’ve pulled a few of his quotes that resonated with us, and we hope you enjoy this video as much as we did.

“It’s no more difficult to be kind than it is to be mean.”

Any action or reaction takes consideration. Sometimes, kindness takes thought, but it’s worth the effort to leave a lasting impact. The more we flex that muscle, turning to kindness in small ways, the easier it is to show kindness in bigger ways. One of our core values is “Give Big,” which means sharing selflessly with others to honor the impact they have had on us. From holding the door, to giving time, to engaging in philanthropic donations, every step we take is one more in the right direction.

“To listen is to show respect.”

It’s easier to talk than it is to wait and listen. If listening is showing respect, then hearing what someone is saying is an act of care. And, when we listen (and hear others), we open ourselves up to the opportunity to learn more about each other and the world. We love an open dialogue — whether it’s about your financial plan or what’s going on in your life, we’re all ears.

“Fight against the natural inclination to be cynical. Assume [others] are good people.”

Another of our core values is “Be Big,” wherein we show up with authenticity, acting responsibly, and taking accountability as we affect the world around us. Part of that is believing that others are showing up authentically and acting in the best interest of the world as a whole. It can be easy to let cynicism creep in when “intangible” and “uncertain” rule headlines, but we find that embracing community, kindness, and making space for others helps our feet find purchase.

“Remember the little things, like being kind and knowing you are not alone.”

As Carell wraps up his speech, he notes the importance of being kind, once again, and also reminds his audience that they are not alone. We share space, time, and the world we live in. Whether you’re looking for a listening ear or evidence-based financial planning advice, you’re not alone — we’re here to support you in living your Live Big® life.
